Kairanga School was established on 10 December 1888, has a rich history of rural education in the Manawatū region. It is one of the oldest Primary Schools in Manawatū, and it is the 21st oldest operating Full Primary school in New Zealand. Located approximately 10 km from Palmerston North, the school has served generations of learners in a close-knit rural community setting.

The school was initially housed in a small building on land purchased by the Education Board. Principal Mr. William McGowan. This building was demolished in 1970.
The new Kairanga Hall is a landmark of the community, and was replaced by the present hall during the 1950s.
During this period, the school also acted as a local post office.
